2021 Side Project Roadmap 🛳

This page will serve as my 2021 side project roadmap. I will collect and organize all of my ideas and strategies here. I have set a goal to #buildinpublic with all of these projects and do a better job of documenting my work.

I didn’t ship any projects in 2020. I won’t beat myself up over it due to the fact some really amazing things happened in 2020. We adjusted to raising twin daughters and both my wife and I took the next step in our careers.

But it’s time to start shipping these ideas bouncing around in my head.

Vision & Mission

All of the ideas I present must support my family’s vision and mission statements.

Vision 💡: My family will live a full and rewarding life by reducing stress, focusing on what matters, and achieving the goals we set.

Mission 🎯: Put God at the center of our lives and relentlessly chase our family’s 5Fs.

Core values are important as well and you can read mine on the home page of this website.

Project Roadmap

I have started playing around with Notion for organizing my thoughts, notes, and todos. It’s been a great tool thus far. As of November 2020, I have tried to stagger 3 of my projects over the next 4 quarters. These might need to change based on time, resources, and what is working. However, I will present the current “roadmap”.

Q1 – Jan 2021 – March 2021

Stratdocs.io

Why I am launching this project

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy strategic planning. After running dozens of strategic planning meetings I realized how simple these plans can be but how hard it is to get everyone on the same page and work towards the same goal.

What problem is this project trying to solve?

This will be a micro SaaS that allows users to sign up and collaborate on their strategic plan together. The software will guide them through common frameworks and offer helpful tips. The output will be a slide deck that they can share with their teams or have printed.

Target market

I will niche this software idea to SaaS founders and leaders. This will help me refine and target the advice and frameworks so they are applicable to most SaaS companies. I love SaaS and would love to help other SaaS companies hit their goals.

Tech

I have no idea how this will “actually” work or what the tech stack will be. I will do some investigating but will likely hire a developer if I get enough interest in actually building the project. I will start with some mockups and use some existing tools to produce a proof of concept.

Marketing

I plan to market this landing page/idea in the following way

  1. Build-in public and share updates on Twitter while @mentioning influencers and using strategic hashtags
  2. Post the landing page in Indie Hackers forum
  3. Post the landing page in a couple of SaaS/product Slack channels I am apart of
  4. Test ProductHunt (not sure the requirements for posting here yet).
  5. Write up all that I am doing and what is working on this website as blog posts.

Northstar Metric

I am targeting 10-25 sign ups on my landing page to prove this is something I should build and would provide value to SaaS founders/leaders.

Q2 – April 2021 – June 2021

ExtolProject.com

Why I am launching this project

You’ll notice I have God in my mission statement. ExtolProject has been a side project idea of mine for a very long time. I launched it as an e-commerce site and shut it down. This project hits me at my core and helps me increase my faith and share it with others.

What problem is this project trying to solve?

This project will strive to encourage Christian business owners to mix their faith into their business. It will challenge them to think about the core values, meeting structure, and customer communication in a way the Bible would encourage. I feel it’s taboo or uncool to talk about mixing your faith with your business. This project will try to strike the balance between the two.

Target market

Christian business owners

Tech

To start this project I will keep it simple. I am going to build a landing page and an email drip campaign. From there I will build some automation for a private Slack channel.

Marketing

Of all my side project ideas this one is going to be the hardest to market. Here is my plan.

  1. Research where Christian business owners hang out online
  2. Join the community
  3. Give value
  4. Organically suggest ExtolProject.com

Northstar Metric

25-100 email opt-ins.

Q3 – July 2021 – September 2021

SaaSPlaybooks.com

Why I am launching this project

I feel very fortunate to have been part of a SaaS product that went from the startup phase to the growth phase.

Efficient and repeatable processes are one of the hardest things to get right coming out of the startup mindset. I am looking to document what we have learned and hopefully help others save time and energy.

What problem is this project trying to solve?

SaaSPlaybooks will be a simple, easy to follow set of rules and instructions for common SaaS business processes and functions.

Target market

SaaS founders and operators.

Tech

You will find a theme with all of these ideas, which is start simple and see which one gains traction and invest in the product development. This project is no different. It will be a simple landing page with a free offer (a completed playbook) and then a CTA to be put on the waitlist for more playbooks.

Marketing

10-25 landing page opt-ins

Q4 – October 2021 – December 2021

Weeklywins.co

Why I am launching this project

Running a company call can be hit or miss. You need to bring energy and excitement to the call. It can be difficult to create energy in an authentic way week over week.

However, your team is consistently winning and you just need to train and show them how to report that. This project will help leaders extract wins from their teams.

What problem is this project trying to solve?

This project will create a Slack bot that asks team members to report a weekly win. The wins will be reported in an aggregate view for the meeting leader to cherry pick.

The other feature that will be included in this project is a view that shares “win analytics”. It will answer questions like

  1. How many wins did my team have this month, quarter, year
  2. Show me each team’s wins in a view
  3. Show me each person’s views in a view

Target market

Any company who uses Slack and runs a weekly meeting.

Tech

Sales site + Slack API + docs & help center
